I Like This Trend

Happy Friday!

You know what? I’ve been extraordinarily happy the last couple of days. Remember last Friday’s post? When I was a smiling fool? Yeah, I’m still like that. I like this trend. Not that I’m not usually a happy person … but it seems tough to wipe the smile off of my face :)

Some of the things making me smile lately are totally simple. Simple pleasures > a lot of things. Like:

- Tic Tacs. I bought a container this week. It’s been years. I actually thought “wow I love these” when I popped a few into my mouth. Minty fresh joy.

- Either my headphones magically got better or some shows play louder on Netflix than others. Sometimes I have a rough time watching episodes on my iPhone while running on the treadmill … but NOT WITH MAD ABOUT YOU! Yes, I’m obsessed. I mentioned this the other day. I love how fast my runs fly by when I get to laugh at 90′s sitcoms.

- Songza. Best app ever. Check it out. Trust me on this one, guys.

- I was walking to the gym yesterday, and an old man was on the sidewalk with a friend of his. He stopped their conversation and waved at me. I waved back, said hello, and asked how he was. He responded with “I like friendly people like you!”. It absolutely made my day.

- I love Glee. We’ve talked about this before, too. I liked every.single.song. on the show last night. Britney 2.0? Genius. I wish Glee clubs existed when I was in high school (I like to think I sound good enough to join one … I do not, but a girl can pretend).

- Someone told me I have a big, warm heart this week. Hearing that made it grow four more sizes.

- I’m going shopping tomorrow with a friend of mine and then for Thai food. And then … the most exciting part of all? I am going to be on my couch in sweatpants by 10PM. Not going to the bar. Not drinking. I’m going to have all of my friends call me super boring, and I’m so incredibly okay with that. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is hosting Saturday Night Live. Sign this girl up!

- The trailer for Pitch Perfect. I can’t wait to see this movie!

I love spreading all of my annoying positivity with you at the end of the week ;)  Tell me what has you smiling lately!

Enjoy your weekend!

Huge Smile

Hey guys! I’m just super duper fantastically happy today. And have been the last couple of days. I’m not totally sure why, but I’m thinking maybe it’s because Glee is back?

Or because there was a pot luck at work yesterday where the main theme was carbohydrates (this girl likes her pasta). I brought a salad. It was the only veggie on the table ;) Balance is key, am I right?

Or maybe because it’s Friday?

Or … possibly because I had a kick ass day at work yesterday with an overwhelmingly positive evaluation from my manager? Like, awesome.

I don’t know the reason. But I know I LIKE IT. I’m outta here, with a huge smile on my face :) Enjoy your day and your weekend!

Message in the Music

Posted on

“It’s hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake him off.”

I love that song. I love Florence + The Machine, and the cast of Glee covered that particular tune during Tuesday night’s episode (did you watch it? There was an excellent message regarding domestic violence). Their acoustic cover of Shake It Out made me truly focus on the lyrics, and reminded me how powerful music can be.

I started thinking about the way music can speak to a person. Music plays a huge part in my everyday life.

While I’m on the stationary bike each morning, will.i.am tells me to go hard or go home.

When I’m on a road trip, Adele takes up residence in my passenger seat. We’re besties. And sound alike, obviously.

When I’m in a terrible mood, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts tend to make me feel like a bad ass and want to punch someone to rock me right out of it.

My coworkers and I have frequent dance parties to We No Speak Americano. Like, at least once a week. We’re total guidos.

When I was in junior high, one of my absolute favorite teachers in the whole world taught a Religion class (I went to a Catholic school). I think I was in the eighth or ninth grade. We had to bring in a song every Friday, and he would choose a different student each week to play their pick. We had everything from Green Day to Blink 182 to Tim McGraw. We listened to the songs each week as a group, and had to interpret what we thought it meant and share our thoughts with the class. It was just a minor part of the lesson plan, but I’ll never forget it. One day, we listened to Uncle Kracker’s “Follow Me” and discovered it was about a man convincing a woman to leave her husband. I would have never realized what it meant without making a conscious effort to pay attention to the lyrics.

Since then, I tend to look for a message in my music. Some songs, of course, don’t have much of one.

I’m looking at you, Ke$ha.

What kind of role does music play in your life? I know it’s an absolute necessity for me when I workout. I forgot my headphones at home last week, and my hour at the gym was unbearable. I don’t want to hear my own heartbeat, I don’t want to hear the man next to me wheezing, and the music distracts me from everyone’s my sweaty smell ;)

How often do you listen to music? Do you ever identify messages in the songs you listen to?

Messy WIAW

Okay, first things first.

Do you watch Glee? More specifically, did you watch it last night? I won’t spoil the plot if you haven’t seen it yet. I came across this performance last week (it’s from last night but was pre released) before remembered that the show returned this week. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the original version (sang by Gotye). This version changed my life (maybe because I love Darren Criss and Matt Bomer?), and I’m listening to it on repeat as I write this post. And singing along, of course.

I have thin apartment walls. I bet my neighbours just love me now ;)

Now that I’ve professed my love for that version of the song, it’s time for another What I Ate Wednesday post. Do you love Wednesdays as much as I do? I love being able to drool over the food on other blogger’s WIAW posts, thanks to Jenn over at Peas and Crayons.

I’m proud to say that I didn’t eat ANY Easter candy yesterday. A tough job, I tell you. That stuff is everywhere. I will tell you that I managed to make a mess of myself and everything around me during every meal, though.

Breakfast, for instance, was eaten in front of my computer while I quickly read some blogs before work. I spilled it on my keyboard, like I do two or three times a week.

Overnight oats:

Oats, acai berry juice, plain Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and flax seed oil. Topped with strawberries, peaches, blueberries.

I had intended on going home for lunch (like I do most days), and had even been dreaming about making a particular sandwich with veggies on the side. Would you like to know when I decided I was having a sandwich for lunch? At 9PM the night before. Yeah, I think about food a lot. I had a weird schedule at work yesterday and was unable to get home for my break, so Subway happened. I made a mess again – but I blame my sandwich artist for this one! She was talking to a coworker and (I would assume) became distracted. She cut my foot long into two six inch buns, and then filled them with the toppings after she realized that wasn’t what I ordered. It would have been much less messy if it would have been kept together during the building.

I take the construction of my sandwiches very seriously, obviously.

A foot long ham on whole wheat bread, with lettuce/tomatoes/cucumbers/green peppers/red onion/olives/pickles/Italian dressing/mustard.

For supper, I stuffed a chicken breast with spinach and ate it alongside leftover quinoa and a mixture of red/yellow peppers, asparagus, carrots, and edamame.

It didn't look pretty for long...

There you go! A full day of eats from Tuesday. I’d like to point out that it’s been awhile since I remembered to take photos for an entire day. Usually my posts are a whole bunch of meals taken over the course of a few days.

Five extra cool points for me, right? :)

Have a kick butt day!
