Battling Stress

Hi everyone! I hope you’re having a wonderful week so far.

I’m just going to jump into today’s post. Alright? :)

Now, I’m really not trying to sound dramatic when I say this … but life has become far more stressful than it used to be. More specifically, work has become more stressful.

I love my job. I really, really, really do. I’m a reporter for a local news channel. But I don’t do “hard news”. I don’t cover murders, car crashes, court cases, etc. I used to do that when I worked in radio, but for now I do happier reports. I tend to focus on telling people’s stories, and try to portray the more upbeat side of life. I love it.

I’ve recently been given a new responsibility to tackle on top of my regular duties. Without going into too much detail … I’m hosting/producing/creating an entire television series by myself. That’s pretty vague, but is really what’s going on at the office. The idea for the show was developed “higher up” at the corporate level of my company, and I was given the role of host and producer. The show doesn’t start until early fall, but I’m required to have most or all of the episodes done in advance. While I’m INCREDIBLY grateful that this opportunity has been given to me (especially so early in my career), I’m freaking out. I need to do my regular job … make a TV series … without working overtime (that was made clear) … produce something of quality … and not lose my mind.

So I’ve been trying to figure out a way to handle the additional stress. Continuing to have regular exercise is going to be very important. Those endorphins have gotta help, right?! ;)

But I’d like your suggestions! What are some things you do to battle stress? Yoga, maybe? I’ve been contemplating signing up for a 21 Day Yoga Challenge … but I worry I won’t have the time.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! How do you avoid pulling your hair out at stressful times?

  1. wow it sounds like you do have a lot going on. i struggle with dealing with stress on a regular basis. i haven’t tried yoga – that is probably a great place to start. but, in addition to getting regular exercise, eating healthy, and getting enough sleep i’ve started trying (although i forgot today) trying to incorporate meditation in my day. so this is new to me – but basically i’m starting easy. and instead of just jumping right into my day first thing, i take 3-5 minutes and sit outside on the porch with my pup and just breathe. it is so simple, but it helps me put my day in perspective and start on a non-crazy note.

  2. Congratulations on your show! I definitely relate to positive opportunities bringing time-crunch stress. Definitely with you on continued exercise–it’s how I stay sane. Yoga could help, even 20 or 30 minutes if you can’t fit in a full hour. It’s nice “me time” where I really just get to focus on my body, and do my best to leave my mind and stressors at the door. (They usually sneak back in during shevasana at the end, but I’m getting better at that each time.) If you could sneak in some yoga before bed, it may help you unwind.

Personally, I find baking a de-stressor, although again – takes time! I say, just leave a little bit of time on most days to do something you enjoy. Reading a book, exercising, watching your favorite TV program (Friends = laughter = anti-stressor), or cooking a quality meal. Good luck!

  3. Yoga definitely helps for me as well as general exercise. In addition, I try to do as much relaxing as I can when I’m home and have time, in form of reading a pleasant interesting book or watching a pleasant movie; go for a walk to clear your head (although that one doesn’t work as well for me as it should haha) also, if you wanna go the supplement route, 5-HTP and GABA are both amino acids that could help

  4. running is my stress release! But I do know that yoga works wonders for some.
Congrats on the promotion though – sounds like you have a cool job.

  5. I was really stressed a few weeks ago with school end stuff and I dealt with it by talking to my friends about it and making sure I made time for my running. I also did a few yoga classes and it helped! Something I find really imp. for me is to take the time to eat healthy while I’m stressed!

  6. Wow, such a great opportunity… perhaps you can channel stress into the additional gig – a creative outlet (or make it really sarcastic and use it to vent!).

I think allowing time to exercise (taking time out) each day is important. I try to get to the gym at lunch as it’s a break I wouldn’t normally have. If not I’ll go at the end of the day before I go home.

I’m okay with stress at work… I tend to stress more about work at home (than at work) if that makes sense. I worry a lot.

So… no useful suggestions – sorry about that!

    Deb

  7. Congrats on the opportunity! It does sound a little overwhelming but on the upside, it sounds like you really love your job and I think that always helps reduce stress levels. Sleep, exercise and proper diet also help… I handle stress much more effectively when I make taking care of myself a priority. The trick is not to fall into the “I’m too busy” trap. When I’m tempted to let my healthy habits slide to make more time for other things, I remind myself that keeping at it will make me way more productive and energetic. Yoga might help but I actually prefer more high-energy workouts to deal with stress… my mind wanders too much in yoga and I’ll dwell on problems if I’m stressed going into a yoga class. But give me a good spin or kick boxing class and my mind doesn’t have much time to agonize over my to-do lists.

  8. I’m catching up on so many posts and am just reading this one now. First of all, WHAT AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY! This is so so so amazing, but I can totally understand how it seems stressful.

I really like to make lists. You would think it would be overwhelming but once you put it all on paper you realize that it’s just a bunch of actionable items and you could put deadlines next to each one (versus it being this growing stress in your mind). And make sure to keep exercise in there! Definitely on the best destressers.
